dc.description.abstract | The structural convergence processes in the European Union and the euro area countries are examined in detail, using the Krugman specialization index and other methods, which results in differing forms of structural convergence. The obtained results are further used to assess the impact of foreign direct investment on structural convergence processes or so-called specialization, including a set of different controlling variables. It is concluded that the impact of investment, spending on research and development, as well as the effect of trade (economic openness) on specialization depends on the relative productivity level. In countries with a relative productivity above the average, these factors contribute to structural divergence, while in countries with relative productivity below the average - structural convergence. It also describes the potential relationship between these factors and the investment's ability to influence specialization. The obtained evaluations show that the structural convergence processes in the euro area countries are more pronounced.
