dc.description.abstract | When the Republic of Latvia became a member state of the European Union on 1st May 2004, important became the issue concerning fulfillment of the requirements prescribed under the European Union law, including the issue in respect to employment of disabled person, where such persons often are discriminated due to their limited work capacity, thus threating they less favorably in comparison with groups of other people. Accession to the European Union also contributed to the recognition of persons with a disability who were not considered as such until now. In addition, as the question concerning employment of disabled persons became more important, the state was obliged to promote the proper involvement of these persons in the field of employment. As a result, employers were obliged to provide appropriate working conditions for people with disabilities. Respective problem issues were partially solved by ratification of UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and transposition of Directive 2000/78/EC establishing a common framework for equal treatment of employment and profession under the national legal enactments of the Republic of Latvia.
