In the philosophy of feminism, the concept of motherhood has been analysed since the middle of the 20th century and has undergone a conceptual development. The understanding of motherhood is different and yet feminism theorists agree that motherhood is a cultural construct that is changing and evolving depending on political, economic and social factors. The studies of motherhood have developed in two interdependent research categories: motherhood as an institution of patriarchal culture, which is oppressive to women, and motherhood as an experience or mothering that is female-enhancing and liberating. Within the framework of this research, motherhood is viewed both as a patriarchal ideology by analyzing the notions and goals of motherhood, and as the opportunity and new practice that has the potential to change society's values and beliefs.
