Single-use plastic packaging serves as one of the main contributing factors to the pollution of the environment. To try and find a solution for this problem, this thesis will be looking at ways in which manipulating with the placement of plastic and paper shopping bags at a grocery store could reduce the consumption of plastic shopping bags, while encouraging consumers to purchase paper bags. The experiment was carried out in four weeks and three days time, in the grocery section of a department store. During the first weeks the control data was obtained, however during the rest of time of the experiment manipulations were carried out with the placement of shopping bags. The results showed significant differences between the control and experimental data. The results also lead to think that the visibility of a specific product could be a more significant predictor whether the product is going to be purchased rather than it’s physical proximity. Key words: placement of products; sustainable behaviour; decision making; nudging; consumption; dual processes; rationality.
