In the subject of geography, students of 9th class primarily derive fragmental and general knowledge in geography of Latvia. The content of education is still hardly linked to real life and the emphasis is directed on passive knowledge. Unfortunately, in geography of Latvia, students are not offered to learn the geography of the municipality in the near vicinity. According to the author, pupils of 9th class should be required to include the geography of the municipality in the learning process and to arrange outdoor lessons in the real environment while learning the geography of Latvia, so that the learning process would seem more understandable, more exciting and more interesting for pupils. Furthermore, it would be beneficial for students to learn the practical work skills in nature and to be able to understand and link the theory with real life. Therefore, the purpose of the Master thesis is to assess the practical works in the study of local lore for the acquisition of geography of Latvia. The design of the Master thesis study is a case study, because of the survey of students, developed and approbated outdoor lessons, and students’ provided feedback after their participation in outdoor lessons. Based on the outdoor lessons and feedbacks provided by students, it is concluded that practical works in study of local lore contribute to the acquisition of geography of Latvia. Key words: study of local lore, outdoor lessons, geography school subject, geography of Latvia.
