The present research focuses on investigating and analysing types of questions in the online user manuals of Facebook and Twitter, which thereafter are compared between the user manuals. The goal of the present research is to discover and compare the types of questions and their language functions that are applied to the selected online user manuals. Discourse analysis is selected as the empirical research method to investigate the types of questions and their language functions in the user manuals of Facebook and Twitter. The results of the present research provide that only two types of questions are used in both user manuals – open questions and closed questions. The results indicate that the type of open questions is the most used type of the questions in the Facebook and Twitter user manuals. Concerning the language functions of these types of questions, the findings of the research present that open questions demand instructions, clarifications or definitions to be explained, and closed questions require positive or negative answers to be replied, thus conveying transactional language function. In this case, the language functions are determined depending of the type of questions. Furthermore, the present research displays various figures and tables concerning the results of the research, which could be a great aid to develop the understanding of the use of questions in online user manuals.
