Latvijas emigrantu kopiena Čikāgā: identitātes dažādās izpausmes

Abstract

Patlaban ārvalstīs dzīvo vairāki simti tūkstoši latviešu un emigrantu skaits turpina pieaugt. Viena no lielākajām latviešu emigrantu kopienām izveidojusies Amerikas Savienotajās Valstīs (ASV). Maģistra darbs veikts par ASV Čikāgas pilsētā, tās tuvākā un tālākā apkārtnē dzīvojošo latviešu izcelsmes emigrantu kopienu. Pētījuma mērķis ir noskaidrot diasporas pārstāvju identitātes dažādās izpausmes. Darba ietvaros veiktas padziļinātas intervijas gan ar Čikāgā dzīvojošajiem latviešiem, gan ar diasporas pētniekiem un dažādu organizāciju pārstāvjiem. Iegūtie rezultāti liecina, ka Latvijas emigrantu kopienai ASV ir raksturīgas vairākas latvisko identitāti veidojošās iezīmes. Tās noteikusi atšķirīga migrācijas pieredze, dzīvošanas ilgums ASV, saskarsme ar latvisko identitāti saglabājušiem cilvēkiem un citiem latviešu vai ārvalstu izcelsmes emigrantiem. Liela nozīme ir kopienai, kurā persona augusi un veidojusi dzīves uzskatus, jo tā spēcīgi ietekmējusi latvisko identitāti un pašapziņu.

Currently several hundred thousand Latvians live abroad and the number of emigrants continue growing. One of the largest Latvian emigrant community is in the United States of America (USA). The master thesis has been carried out about community of Latvian emigrants in the city of Chicago and its surroundings. The study aims to clarify the multi-layered identities. To obtain the necessary information, interviews with Chicago living Latvians, researchers of diaspora and also representatives of different organizations were used The results show that the Latvian emigrant community in the USA has several forming Latvian identity features. These have been determined by a different migration experience, time spent in the U.S., contact with people that are preserved Latvian identity and other Latvian or foreign emigrants. Very important is community in which a person has grown and developed life beliefs, because it has a strong influence on the Latvian identity and self-confidence.
