The rapid impact of the sharing economy on the economy in the European Union has caused a number of problems, especially in the area of passenger transport. Passenger carriers by taxis in the member states of the European Union are threatened because new entrants enter the area of passenger transport market on the basis of a sharing economy. In the European Union, the sharing economy is not strictly regulated, therefore, it is difficult to understand how strict it should be regulated and what the consequences for the future of the economies of the member states of the European Union can cause. The aim of this master’s thesis is to find out and analyze the nature, development and impact of sharing economy on carriage of passengers by taxi in the European Union, to find out what regulations exist for carriage of passengers by taxi and similar types of carriage of passengers in the member states of the European Union, and specifically explore the impact of the sharing economy on the road transport sector in Latvia. The results of the master's thesis indicate that the sharing economy is in the early stages of development, has a very positive influence on the development of new technological solutions, negatively affects the passenger carriers by taxi, because passenger carriers by taxi are not able to adapt so quickly to the new principles of the sharing economy, and that is creating unfair competition between passenger carriers by taxi and companies that operate within the framework of a sharing economy.
