No pētījumā iesaistītājiem bērniem, 51,5% bija vīriešu dzimuma pārstāvji, lielākā daļa aprūpētāju bija ieguvuši augstāko izglītību. Noteikta apgriezta saistība starp bērna viedierīces lietošanas prasmēm un attīstības līmeni vecuma grupās: 6-12 mēneši (β = -1,54 [2.22; -0.87]) / Kruskala-Valisa tests 11,12, p = 0,01; 18-24 mēneši (β = -0,33 [0.53; -0.08]) / (Kruskala-Valisa tests 7,72, p = 0,05). 4 Background: The usage of smart devices has become one of the hallmarks of daily life in the present era. With the increase of access to a variety of screen devices in our living environment, the percentage of time devoted to usage of these technologies increases as well. Studies have investigated many factors with potential impact on child development, social skills development and sleep quality. In light of the accelerated increase in daily usage of smart devices, including in the lives of children, we would assume there must be some impact on the aforementioned factors. Every habit has its pros and cons, the frequency and amount of time spent are significant. Aim: Understand whether and determine and how daily usage of smart devices among children up to three years of age impacts sleep and development, and to establish care givers’ attitudes in promoting this habit. Methods: The research was performed through the initial development of a questionnaire, combining several previously known instruments including the Münchener Funktionelle Entwicklungsdiagnostik (Munich Functional diagnostic) test, the Epworth sleepiness scale and Sleep hygiene index. Parents and other caregivers of 6 to 36 months old children were surveyed. The questionnaire was completed using two formats - in paper form or via the online survey platform QuestionPro. The collected data were subjected to detailed analysis using data processing methods. Results: The Munich Functional diagnostic test was performed to assess child development for each age group (6-12, 13-18, 19-24, and 25-36 months) in our study. In order to assess correlations between smart device usage and child sleep quality, we made multiple models that were adjusted for different parameters including level of education of care giver, gender of child and number of siblings. The study included 4 123 children and caregivers, of them 21,6% were children 6-12 months old, 20,9% were 13-18 months old, 18,9% – 19-24 months old, and 38,5% – 25-36 months old. Of the children involved in the study, 51,5% were boys, most of the caregivers had completed higher education. In this study we observed an inverse association between screen time and sleep time at night for 19-24 months old children (effect estimate were β = -9,09 [95% confidence interval, CI -16,02; -2,15]). This association was not found for other age groups. A statistically significant association between child development and screen time was found for the age group 6-12 months (β = -1,26 [-2,24; -0,29]. Inverse association between a child’s smart device user skills and development was found for age groups: 6-12 months β = -1,54 [-2,22; 6 -0.87]; / Kruskal-Wallis test 11,12, p = 0,01; 18 – 24 months / (Kruskal-Wallis test 7,72, p = 0,05).
