At the end of the 20th century and the early 21st century, the rapid technological development created the environment for the creation of electronic sport (e-sport). E-sports is defined by playing videogames on a professional level in different types of genre. E-sports has developed a noteworthy fan culture that in numbers can compete with traditional sports and is capable of filling the largest traditional sports arenas. In 2018, the Baltic e-Sports League was established. In the Baltic e-Sports League, e-sport athletes from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia can participate individually or with a team in various disciplines such as Counter-Strike, PUBG, Rocket League, League of Legends with a secured prize pool. Taking into account that the profession of e-sport athlete is not recognized in Latvia so far, the aim of the work is to find out, using the rational choice theory, the motivation factors of the Baltic e-sports league athletes to engage in e-sports. Comparison of e-sports and traditional sports was carried out to find out if e-sport can be considered as a sport. It was compared whether there was a difference between the basic tasks of the e-sportsman and the traditional sports athlete.
