Archaeological evidence of 14th–18th century burial practices
in the territory of Latvia
Churchyards, cemeteries, burial sites, burial customs, grave goods, beliefs
The thesis presents an analysis of material from archaeologically excavated 14th–18th century burial sites, with the aim of characterising the religious life of the indigenous population in the period after the Christianisation of the area of present-day Latvia. In previous research, various aspects of the religious life of the medieval and early modern population have mainly been considered on the basis of written sources and folklore evidence. The archaeological material has been used in a piecemeal fashion, although it provides the possibility of assessing the situation much more objectively and over a longer period of time, from the recent past right back to prehistoric times. Although the whole of the burial ritual cannot be reconstructed from archaeological evidence, it does indicate certain norms that were observed in the course of preparing the deceased for burial, undertaking the burial itself and commemorating the deceased.
