Šis pētījums skar 21.gadsimta prasmju atspoguļojumu mācību grāmatās angļu valodā 11.klasē. Mācību process skolās ir organizēts saskaņā ar mācību priekšmetu standartu. Mācību grāmatas ir atslēgkomponents lielākā daļā valodas programmu. Mācību grāmatas nodrošina noderīgu resursu gan skolēniem, gan skolotājām, kā arī tās var lietot ne tikai valodu apguves procesā. Šī diplomdarba mērķis ir novērtēt divas mācību grāmatas angļu valodā: Insight Upper-Intermediate, publicēta Oxford University Press, un Wider World 4, izdota Pearson Education Limited izdevniecībās, no 21.gadsimta prasmju viedokļa ar mērķi noskaidrot, cik lielā mērā dotās mācību grāmatas atspoguļo šīs prasmes. Šī pētījuma aktualitāti nosaka fakts, ka šobrīd eksperti pētījumu un cilvēkresursu izvēles jomā piešķir lielu nozīmību 21.gadsimta prasmēm jo tās ir unikālas un palīdz gūt panākumus dzīvē un karjerā. Izaicinājumi, ar ko jaunā paaudze saskarās mūsdienās, apstiprina 21.gadsimta prasmju nozīmīgumu. Šis diplomdarbs apspriež 21.gadsimta prasmju būtību, to nepieciešamību mūsu dzīvē un karjerā, iespējamību pielietot šīs prasmes angļu valodas stundu laikā, mācību grāmatas svarīgumu valodas apguves procesā, pareizās mācību grāmatas izvēles nozīmi un 21.gadsimta prasmju saistību ar mācību grāmatu uzdevumiem, kuri attīsta receptīvas un produktīvas prasmes. Diplomdarba teorētiskajā daļā darba autore analizē dažādus literatūras avotus un atzītu valodas ekspertu pētījumus. Teorijas analīze dod priekšstatu par mācību grāmatu novērtēšanas kritērijiem un piedāvā iepazīties ar galvenajiem vadlīnijām mācību grāmatu izvēles procesā. Lai iegūtu rezultātus praksē, pētījuma autore ir izanalizējusi uzdevumus, kas attīsta runāšanas un lasīšanas prasmes Insight Upper-Intermediate un Wider World 4 mācību grāmatās no 21.gadsimta prasmju viedokļa, jo iepriekš minētajās mācību grāmatās dominē tieši šie vingrinājumi. Turklāt tika veikta skolēnu aptaujas lapu izpēte, lai uzzinātu viņu viedokli par minēto mācību grāmatu. Tika organizētas intervijas ar skolotājiem, lai uzzinātu viņu viedokli par minētajām mācību grāmatām. Pēdējais pētījuma posms tika veltīts interviju un skolēnu aptaujas lapu analīzei. Autore secina, ka abu mācību grāmatu ar runāšanas un lasīšanas prasmju attīstīšanas uzdevumiem atspoguļo 21.gadsimta prasmes, kas ir norādīts tabulā. Turklāt pētījums secina, ka Rīgas Ģimnāzijas skolotāji apzinās, kas ir 21.gadsimta prasmes un zina, kā tās pielietot savās angļu valodas stundās. The present research concerns representation of 21st century skills in textbooks of English in Grade 11. Teaching process at schools is organized according to the curriculum. Textbooks are a key component in most language programs. Textbooks provide a useful resource for both teachers and students, and can be used not only as a source of language acquisition. The aim of the present Diploma Paper is to evaluate two textbooks of English: Insight Upper-Intermediate published by Oxford University Press and Wider World 4 issued by Pearson Education Limited from the point of view of 21st century skills to determine to what extent the textbooks reflect 21st century skills. The topicality of the issue is determined by the fact that nowadays experts in the research and selection of human resources give great importance to 21st century skills as they are unique and help to succeed in life and career. The challenges the younger generation faces today justify the significance of 21st century skills. The present Diploma Paper discusses the essence of 21st century skills, and their necessity in our lives and career, the development and implementation of 21st century skills in ELT lessons, the significance of a textbook during language acquisition, the importance of choosing the right textbook and the connection of 21st century skills with textbook activities that develop receptive and productive skills. In the theoretical part of the Diploma Paper the author analysed literature and explored textbook evaluation guidelines presented by acknowledged language experts. The analysis of the theory provides the description of the process of textbook evaluation and offers the main guidance to teachers for the choice of the right textbook. In order to obtain practical results of the research, the case study on the analysis of the activities that advance speaking and reading skills in Insight Upper-Intermediate and Wider World 4 concerning 21st century skills was conducted. The questionnairing of students was carried out in order to find out their opinion on the textbook used during their classes. The interviews with teachers were performed in order to learn their opinion about textbooks for this reason. The last stage of the case study was devoted to the analysis of gained data. The author has concluded that 21st century skills were reflected in both the textbooks of English. The study has shown that speaking and reading exercises of two textbooks develop 21st century skills. Moreover, it has been concluded that teachers of Riga Gymnasium are aware of what 21st century skills are and know how to implement them in their ELT lessons.
