Andrew Miller’s Ingenious Pain and Pure deal with such phenomena as emotion, compassion, sympathy, empathy, pain, and mortality in the society and culture of the 18th century known as the Age of Reason. The present paper focuses on the representation of the Enlightenment culture in the novels within the interdisciplinary theoretical framework that draws on theories of historical fiction, of emotion in general, and of empathy and sympathy in particular, of the connection between emotion and literature, and of the connection between narrative and ethics. The analysis and interpretation carried out in the present paper reveal that Ingenious Pain and Pure portray and examine the Enlightenment self and its detachment from emotion, which leads to its inability to sympathize with others. Miller criticizes the mindset of the 18th century showing that obsession with reason leads to emotional numbness and an inability to be fully compassionate.
