Contact dermatitis is a worldwide problem. Men and women in each age group suffer from contact dermatitis. In the United States of America, 13 million people suffer from contact dermatitis. Unfortunately, in Latvia we do not have statistics on the incidence of contact dermatitis. This causes problems in diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment and prevention. 1071 patients were diagnosed contact dermatitis in Latvia in 2018. In Latvia, the incidence of contact dermatitis among women is higher (73,4%) and is more seen in patients between 19 and 39 years of age. In 2018, most of the newly diagnosed cases of contact dermatitis were diagnosed clinically in Riga, but in Ventspils - by using the patch test. Patch test for diagnosing contact dermatitis is more commonly used in regional towns of Latvia though its use has to be higher. The most common local treatment of contact dermatitis in Latvia includes local corticosteroids and antibacterial creams and ointments (mupiracin). A questionnaire was compiled to collect epidemiological data on contact dermatitis and recommended to Latvian dermatovenerologists. The patch test is recommended to be used more frequently in dermatovenerologists’ practice in Latvia and a comprehensive research on epidemiology of contact dermatitis should be undertaken.
