Introduction: The aim of this literature review is to describe the factors, that are mentioned in the literature to be influencing orthodontic treatment duration. The review hypothesis was that longer treatment time is related to a more complicated diagnosis. Methods: In this review, 133 literature sources in the English language from years the 1945- 2021 involving children, adolescent, and adult patients were used. Results: Most authors report that extractions, Class II malocclusion, impacted canines, and factors related to patient’s compliance had a significant effect on treatment time. There has been found no link between age and treatment duration. Conclusions: The review supports the hypothesis that longer treatment time is related a to more complicated diagnosis.
