This study investigates the relation between risk tolerance and such factors as gender, age and financial competences. The study measures these factors using the data gathered during April 2021 from respondents in Latvia and Estonia. The methodology of this study is based on I.Wahl and E.Kircher recent study of 2020, where a total of 4 categories of risk tolerance are defined. This study finds, firstly, that there is a significant difference in risk tolerance between genders – men showing higher risk tolerance in all four categories of risk tolerance. Secondly, the study finds that there is a negative correlation between risk tolerance and age. Thirdly, the study finds that specialized financial education, but, more importantly, self-assessment of financial competences greatly influences the investment decision making.
