The author of this teacher`s portfolio set out to answer the question – Which reflection methods are the most suitable for form 5 English lessons, and promote student`s engagement in the reflection activities and language study process as a whole? The case study included in this paper was conducted in the base school of the author of the student`s portfolio, in four parallel groups. Each of these groups present unique challenges and has a different climate within the group. The Latvian education system currently is proposed with a unique, never-before-seen challenge – distance learning brought on by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic that has drastically changed the learning environment (classroom to home), and the way how teachers and students communicate. Teachers and students are separated by screens that cancel the opportunity to communicate by facial expressions and gestures, only verbal and written communication is available. It is more important than ever to choose effective methods for organizing different parts of the lesson. Even more than in the classroom, it is important to seek methods that allow to include every student in the learning process, allow the teacher to follow tstudent`s involvement. The last stage of a lesson, dedicated to reflective activities, is often challenging both for new and experienced teachers because of planning within a 40-minute lesson, selection of effective methods, staying within the timeframe. The selection of methods must be done taking into account the age of students, availability of technologies, and technological knowledge of students. Student`s existing reflection skills is an important factor when choosing the way the reflective activities are designed. In this teacher`s portfolio as part of the case study, several reflection methods were tested. Three digital tools- Kahoot!; Google Jamboard; Uzdevumi. lv. Three common reflection methods adapted for the digital environment – open questions to the class, “exti tasks”, and individual communication with students via e-mail, WhatsApp, or phone were also included in the case study. During the data collection process the student`s involvement in the process and attitudes towards methods were observed, challenges and difficulties connected to each method were identified. Benefits and challenges proposed by each method were observed and reviewed.
