Atslēgas vārdi: vizuālie mediji, reklāma, vizuālizpratne, kritiskā domāšana, fenomenoloģija The aim of the Master thesis was to explore teacher experience of using visual media to develop critical thinking skills and visual literacy in secondary school English language lessons. The author also focused on advertisements specifically, as a type of visual media, that could contribute to the development of the aforementioned skills. It is a belief of the author that properly used, visual media and, thus, advertisements can not only enhance the study process as a form of authentic material and retain students' attention, but also bring about the development of various students' transversal skills. The data were collected through three types of data collection methods - a questionnaire, two focus group discussions and two expert interviews. The chosen design and methodology aligned with the principles of the phenomenological research. The data were analysed and interpreted to gain an in-depth understanding of the teacher experiences of the phenomenon explored. The data reveal that English language teachers of secondary school use visual media in ESL classes often, however, they are less confident in their abilities to use advertisements in a way that would enable the development of students visual literacy and critical thinking skills. Keywords: visual media, advertisements, visual literacy, critical thinking, phenomenology.
