It is important for any person connected with the music industry to be aware of his role in copyright. It is important to understand what rights are protected and what must be respected in order not to violate the rights of another person. Copyright and related rights to musical works are very fragmented, as the creation of one musical work involves different entities and creates many different rights. The aim of the work is to clarify how the current copyright regulation of Latvia can be improved so that it is suitable for the ways in which musical works are created and used today, so that other rights and freedoms of persons are not limited. In the process of developing the work, the author came to a number of conclusions, mainly a non-normative question about the use of a phonogram fragment or sample to create a new musical work. The work consists of three parts: the place of musical works in copyright, the legal aspects of the use of phonograms and the problem of the use of musical works.
