Research about bird migration gives a lot of information about the course of life of birds. Small birds are often used for these kinds of studies as they are more accessible. Migration studies for small birds currently do not really have the possibility of identifying the bird location at the time of flight. Using the most advanced methods for bird migration, the data is collected by placing a detection device on the bird and removing it during the next nesting period (after a year). Migration paths are therefore calculated from sensor data after the bird has returned to the nesting site. Because the bird's body is light, the device that transmits the localization data must also be small, light, and low in energy consumption. The solution proposed at this work would be using low-energy networks. In general, IoT technologies are recently becoming more popular, and the range of application techniques is also becoming more widespread. Animal monitoring (also with geolocation capabilities) is considered as one of the uses. The aim of this work “Monitoring system for objects equipped with LoRaWAN transmitter” is to create a prototype system that would allow the capture of migrant bird data at the time of migration and display the location on a map from received transmitter data. Low-energy transmitters are best suited for this because they are known for their qualities like the long life of the battery and its small size. The work looks at the characteristics of different network capabilities, focusing on using “The things network” (TTN), which is a network of free-access receivers. Network reception quality and other data is considered. The work also looks at the best localization algorithms from transmitter data, and the latest studies in this and similar areas. The experimental part of the work involves working with real transmitters and its data reading and collecting. The closest TTN receivers in Riga and its surrounding cities have been tested for their signal receiving qualities. Work also includes finding the best algorithms for data processing and choosing the best method for calculation of a geographical location. The system has been developed for reading, processing and storing the data in cloud infrastructure. A procedure has been created to show this data on a map, as well as calculate the potential location, where the accuracy of the calculation is estimated as a little less than 1km.
