The bachelor paper "Promoting the reading skills of older preschool age children" analyses the understanding of reading skills and the possibilities for their acquisition within the framework of various theoretical methodologies, improving the learning environment. The aim of the work is to explore the possibilities for promoting reading skills for early childhood children. The objectives of the paper are 1) to gather the knowledge of pedagogues and psychologists about the characteristics of the development of older preschool age children and the promotion of reading skills in the pedagogical process; 2) to conduct an empirical study of the promotion of children’s reading skills using various approaches and methods in play lessons, creating a learning environment that promotes reading skills in a group and 3) to develop proposals for preschool education educators to promote reading skills. During the empirical study, the learning environment was improved (variety of materials, possibility to choose, self-directed learning opportunities) and diverse approaches based on the principles of transactional, interactive and holistic approach were used to promote reading skills of 6-7-year-old children. The reading skills of the children involved in the study improved, which proves the hypothesis that the reading skills of older preschool age children are improved in the pedagogical process if: 1) the teacher purposefully uses diverse approaches that promote reading skills and 2) the learning environment in the group is appropriate for developing reading skills. The paper consists of an introduction, 2 chapters, conclusions, proposals, 37 references and 6 appendices. The paper includes 6 tables, 13 pictures, volume of work – 50 pages. Keywords: reading skills, learning environment, older preschool age, promoting.
