The author of the paper is a practicing teacher, who has observed the students, who neither disturb the teacher nor take active part in the lesson; their success in studies is quite average as well as they do not ask for help or perform initiative. The author has called them quiet children. As a result the author has come to the issue what pedagogical opportunities there are to involve quiet children in studies, to help them become both more socially active at the lessons and improve their performance. The aim of the paper is to research the phenomenon of quiet children and pedagogical strategies used. To reach the aim the theoretical literature about quiet children’ phenomenon was studied and analysed and it was concluded that currently in Latvia there is no relevant research about the issue. At the same time the author has concluded that the researchers of other countries have come across the issue of quiet children. As it is inferred in the research, the reasons of poor students’ involvement can be different: introversion, anxiousness, poor vocabulary, shyness. However, it is significant for a teacher to understand what strategies to implement to enable a kid to be socially active at the lessons and achieve higher results. Multiple pedagogical strategies in theory which a teacher can apply were summarised: a thrustworthy contact with a student, positive feedback, the use of IT, teaching to look for and ask for help. Doing empirical research the author has chosen one situation research, implementing activity research. The author also interviewed some teachers, using a partly structured interview. In the activity research a situative assessment was made, three level interventions were elaborated, which were checked in practice. At the end conclusions were made. After going through empirical research it could be concluded that when working with silent kids it is important to build trustworthy relationship between a student and a teacher. The process of activating a student has to be gradual: Stage 1 – effective communication after school to build up a contact with the student. Stage 2 - effective communication after classes about school environment to strengthen positive attitude. Stage 3 – effective communication at the lessons about the contents of studies. It is not allowed to start a new stage before the previous one has not been over successfully. In conclusion of the paper it has been proved that elaborated interventions and advice can activate students in the process of learning.
