Diplomdarbs sastāv no 61 lappuses, satur 7 attēlus, 4 tabulas, 7 pielikumus. The aim of the work: to theoretically research and analyze the literature in order to empirically prove the importance of using free play for the development of self-directed learning skills of primary school students. To develop recommendations for integrating free play into the learning process. Tasks: 1. To study the findings of pedagogical and psychological scientists on self-directed learning, 2. To find out the concept and types of free play, using pedagogical, psychological, neurobiological, scientific literature and to analyze its impact on self-directed learning and possibilities of its use in primary school. 3. To integrate free play lessons in the learning process by practically testing and evaluating the results obtained in the research. The thesis consists of: introduction, 3 chapters with 6 subsections, conclusions and conclusion, list of used literature with 50 sources in Latvian, English and Russian. Thesis consists of 61 page, contains 7 figures, 4 tables, 7 appendices. The problem of the study was raised on the basis of scientific evidence of the need for children to play freely and the well-established value of self-directed learning in education. Within the framework of the diploma thesis, a research has been carried out with the aim to find out the types of free play (expressions), its quality criteria and to integrate free play into the learning process. 20 second grade students were observed in the pedagogical observation, a case study was performed for one 2nd grade student. 70 students (three third grade teams, two fourth grade teams) from five different Latvian cities were involved in the pilot, with the aim of finding out students' self-management skills in a science lesson using free play. Students and teachers were surveyed before and after the pilot to compare the results of the pilot. The findings gained in the diploma thesis are relevant for primary school teachers, parents, children's educators, and creators of educational content.
