The goal of the paper is to analyse how the concept of evil is conveyed in the novel by studying its representation throughout history and understanding how the novel explores the relationship between human nature and evil. Though the novel was written in 1954, it is topical as it portrays a battle between totalitarianism and democracy – currently fought in Russian-Ukrainian war. The theoretical part reviews literature on the concept of evil, including theistic and atheistic perspectives and concludes that evil is intentional destruction, cruelty and selfishness. In the empirical part, a novel’s close reading and analysis of the portrayal of evil allow to conclude that violence and aggression result from the destructive potential of human behaviour, which is fuelled by self-interest and a desire for power. The novel depicts a miniature version of society and suggests that humans are their own worst enemies.
