The bachelor thesis deals with the regulation of the institute of the legate in Latvia and other European countries belonging to the Roman-Germanic family of law. The aim of the thesis is to study and analyse the normative regulation of the institute of the legate in different countries and to compare it with the regulation of our country, individualizing the problematic issues of the institute of the legate in the Latvian Civil Code. In order to achieve the aim of the work, the author examines the historical regulation of the institute of the legate, analyses the Latvian regulation of the institute of the legate, examines the Italian, French, German and Estonian regulation of the institute of the legate, comparing it with the Latvian Civil Code and defining where the differences and similarities can be seen, as well as examines the problematic issues which have not yet been resolved by the legislator but which continue to cause confusion. The thesis concludes that the institution of the legate varies greatly from country to country, although it was originally created in the ancient Roman Empire, which provided the basis for each country to develop the institute of the legate according to its own legal system perspective. There are also perceived deficiencies in the Latvian legislation on conditional legacies and immovable property as the subject of the legate, which, in the author's opinion, need improvement.
