Mesenteric ischemia, particularly acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI), is a rare disease that most commonly affects the elderly, but it is rapidly progressive and fatal. AMI is diagnosed by imaging methods. Unfortunately, laboratory analyzes are not used for the diagnosis of AMI because they are nonspecific, so specific and early biomarkers are sought. The aim of the work was to study the levels of creatinine, C-reactive protein (CRP) and kidney damage molecule 1 (KIM-1) in blood plasma of rats at different intervals of intestinal ischemia. No correlation was found between creatinine concentration and ischemia time. CRP levels increased after 90 and 120 minutes, and KIM-1 increased after 120 minutes. These results suggest that CRP and KIM-1 are altered in the AMI model, but there is no evidence of their specificity when other diseases are suspected, including intestinal or renal.
