The objective of the master's thesis entitled “Wellbeing of single-parent families in Latvia from parents’ perspective” is to examine the well-being of single-parent families with at least one minor child and to identify and comprehend the factors that influence it. Single-parent families with minor children represent the predominant family structure in Latvia, constituting 24% of the total number of families. The theoretical framework employed in this study is the objective list theory, which is a needs-based wellbeing theory. The qualitative research method was used to achieve the goal of the study. The data were collected through eight semi-structured interviews, encompassing seven interviews with mothers and one with a father. Thematic analysis was applied to the analysis of the empirical data, which allows to systematically identify recurring themes within the dataset. The findings demonstrate that the well-being of single-parent families is influenced by various pivotal factors, including the availability of financial and time resources, employment and work quality that ensure the work-family balance, and the practical, financial, and emotional involvement of the noncustodial parent. An essential source of daily support for these families stems from their network of relatives and friends. Nurturing children in a sole caregiving role fosters independence, self-confidence, and adaptability in parents, while children tend to develop resilience at a relatively rapid pace. The thematic analysis further reveals that single-parent families perceive a lack of appreciation and support from the state, and societal understanding of the challenges and difficulties faced by these families remains deficient.
