Ethanol is considered a major factor that affects gut microbiome, however current evidence regarding its direct effects is conflicting. Based on the provided information, participants of Latvian Microbiome Project study were split into groups according to their alcohol consumption patterns and compared using various gut microbiome metrics. Differences were found in gut microbiome composition between rare and systematic drinkers. Systematic consumption of wine was associated with greater microbiome alpha-diversity indices, compared to occasional drinkers, and these differences were also reflected in the structure of microbial networks. However, the same effect was not observed when wine consumers were compared to non-drinkers.
