Ievads. No visu respondentu skaita 12 jeb 7,95% jau bija identificētās hroniskas saslimšanas, taču turpināja pakļaut sevis riska faktoriem. Secinājumi. Medicīnas studentu dzīvesveida paradumi un zināšanas neatbilst hronisku slimību modificējamo riska faktoru novēršanai, kas apstiprina nepieciešamību izglītot medicīnas studentus par šīs jomas aktualitātēm. Visaptveroša izpratne šajā jautājumā palīdzēs novērst hronisku slimību attīstību, kas ir primārās profilakses pamats. Introduction. The worldwide spread of chronic diseases increases utterly each year and amounts up to 70% of the vast majority of mortal cases all over the world. Cardiovascular diseases, cancerous conditions, non-insulin diabetes as well as respiratory diseases are defined as chronic diseases or conditions. According to multiple studies, an unhealthy lifestyle and exposure of risk factors are considered as the major causes of these conditions. Aim of the study. The objective of the following research was to obtain modifiable risk factors for chronic diseases distribution amongst the students of the University of Latvia as well as to evaluate the awareness and informativeness relatively to lifestyle traits impact on chronic disease development in the medical students’ environment. Methods and materials. The students of Medicine and Nursing program of the University of Latvia participated in the study. Anonymous research questionnaires which consisted of 57 questions on student lifestyle traits as well as the knowledge of prevention major role towards chronic disease development were carried out and handed out. As a result, 151 questionnaires were collected from the recipients. The results of the research have been processed by Microsoft Excel 2016 and analysed by IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 version software. Results. The major identified risk factors were smoking at 32,67% respondents. As for using alcohol, those who choose wine or champagne, 74% overconsume a daily recommended intake, although 32,10% choose high spirits. 17,39% were recognised as overweight and 8% recipients had obesity conditions. 30% admitted the chronical lack of physical activities in their daily routine. 43,38% do not consume fruit on daily basis, whereas 18,67% do not consume 200g vegetables per day. Recommended daily amount of wholegrain products is not consumed by 10,67% recipients, 51,33% sometimes consume ones. 51,05% overconsume meat, whereas butchery production is consumed by 52,45% recipients, a chocolate bar as the most common snack is consumed by utter 70,68% recipients. 37,33% respondents had never heard of the Mediterranean diet before, 23,33% were not aware of recommended intakes of fish, 16,67% respondents had no knowledge of the beneficial impact of olive oil, 24,6% were not informed of max daily amount of salt consumption as 5g. 59,33% of all recipients would be able to inform patients about the potential benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle. Conclusions. Summarising the results of the research, it has been concluded that the vast majority of the medical students lack knowledge as well as awareness of healthy life principles, which prove the crucial necessity of educating and updating medical scholars in this field. Comprehensive understanding of the matter might utterly assist in the preventive measures of chronic diseases developing which is the most profound basis in prevention.
