dc.description.abstract | Background: Nurses have a responsibility to respect and promote patient autonomy, informed consent, and privacy in the course of their work. By making the patient an active participant in their own care, whose needs and priorities are considered alongside disease management, we create patient-centered care. Objective: The aim of the study was to explore the perceptions of surgical patients and nurses on the observance of patient autonomy, informed consent, and privacy in the surgical department. Methods: A qualitative study with an inductive approach was conducted. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews with five patients and five nurses. The collected data were transcribed and analyzed according to Kropli and Raščevska's qualitative data analysis. Results: Patients are satisfied with the work of health care workers but feel that they are not provided with clear information, which makes it difficult for them to participate in decision-making. Patients independently search for information on the Internet to find answers to questions about their health status. In some situations, patients feel pressured to provide informed consent. Privacy is a low priority, although patients sometimes experience loud behavior from other patients in shared rooms, which is difficult for them to tolerate. Nurses have different understandings of patient autonomy, informed consent, and privacy. Nurses support patient autonomy, but it is more important for patients to follow doctor's orders. In some cases, nurses inform patients about medical procedures without obtaining their consent. Nurses can ensure patient privacy for certain medical procedures, but they cannot ensure patient privacy in shared rooms and encourage patients to compromise.
