This bachelor thesis examines the right to euthanasia, or the right to die. The author explores the different forms of euthanasia, its positive and negative aspects, as well as its relationship to religion and morality. In assessing the positive and negative aspects of the right to death it also compares different opinions on the necessity of introducing such a right in Latvia. The author analyses the regulations of countries where the right to euthanasia exists, as well as the reasons why such regulations exist in highly developed countries. After researching the court legislation, conclusions are made on the necessity of introducing the right to euthanasia in the Latvia legal system as a fundamental human right arising from person’s free choice in a democratic state. At the time of writing the bachelor thesis, the Latvia legal system does not yet have a regulation on the right to death, but this thesis is aimed at developing and understanding of the positive and negative aspects of euthanasia and its forms. The author believes that it is necessary to introduce a right to die legislation in the Latvian legal system, which could alleviate the suffering of many terminally ill people. Keywords: euthanasia, life as the highest value, morality, religion, forms of euthanasia, foreign national regulations, court practice.
