The research is about the experiences of young people with problematic behavior in support centers in Riga. The aim of this study is to investigate how staying in Riga youth centers affects successful experiences for young people with problematic behavior. The research questions allows to understand how childhood experiences have influenced the development of problematic behavior, how youth centers help young people to have successful experiences, and how stereotypes and labeling in a wider context affect young people and the centers they attend. To achieve the objective, the author conducted 6 semi-structured interviews with young people who are characterized by problematic behaviour and who visit a Riga youth support center, as well as an expert interview. The research is based on two theoretical approaches: the Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) theory and the Good life model (GLM) theory. Behavioral disorders in most cases arise from adverse childhood experiences. The experience of young people in support centers is different, but generally it is evaluated as promoting significant changes for development. Stereotypes prevailing in society, labeling young people and support centers weaken the motivation of young people to change. Support center staff often play an important role in young people’s lives.
