To realizācija prasa jaunu pieeju, zināšanas un darba metodoloģiju.
The 21st century is characterised by the rapid development of technologies which also entails requirements for new skills and new ways of approaching and using information. One of the centres of changes is libraries, wherewith also children libraries, which at present have become both storage facilities of books, and the centres of culture, information and lifelong learning. It is important that, apart from main functions of libraries, new ones have been added as well, and all these functions enter into a new phase of development and reach a new degree. Implementation of these functions requires a new approach, knowledge and methods of work.
Libraries increasingly offer access to computers, as well as free internet, a possibility of choosing literature, playing games offered by the library and participating in the events arranged by it. However, apart from modern information technologies, which largely involve children and teenagers, we have to think more intensively about traditional methods of encouraging reading. Such methods as reading, telling, different meetings, exhibitions and competitions remain invaluable. As seen from the research, these things are not forgotten by any of the libraries which operation has been investigated in the Bachelor’s thesis.
Thus, also the goal of the Bachelor’s thesis has been set accordingly – to investigate what children and young people do at the library during their spare time, what offered services they use more and what less, and what new features they would like to see in the libraries.
Having performed polling and by considering the adaptation-innovation theory, it can be concluded that the majority of visitors of children libraries are of the adaptive type – they mostly use the already available services and offers of the library. There are less of those who offer something new themselves and try to implement it. In the libraries, children predominantly use computers, access to the free internet, read magazines, take books to be read at home and attend interesting events. According to the results of the research, it has been discovered that the polled children do not offer any innovations to libraries themselves.
