Since year 2000 European Commission in cooperation with youth organizations
have developed number of programs for young people, which altogether form
integrated, wide ranged strategy for youth development. One of its‘ priorities is
informally, through mutual cooperation gained skills and education. The purpose of this
work is to investigate and elicit on how EU youth programs facilitate the increase of
social capital of individuals. Hypothesis put forward in the work assert that
participation in youth programs increase young people social capital in two ways: it
complement their knowledge and expand contacts as well as promote openness,
security and sustainable development of the society through usage of acquired contacts
and knowledge in practice. Research methods used in the work include document
analysis, participatory observations and in-depth interviews with experts and young
people who participate in EU youth programs
