The problem of interpreting the preface to Luke's Gospel relates to its uniqueness-there are no Biblical parallels. The aim of this thesis is to look at parallels outside the Bible in Luke's socio-historical environment. The study shows that the extra-Biblical parallels most closely related to the text of Luke are not to be found, contrary to the postion of the majority of New Testament commentators, in ancient historical prefaces, but, rather, among prefaces to ancient so-called scientific works. This study examines different styles of preface writing and compares them to the preface in Luke. Understanding the proper parallel provides insights into the exegesis of the text and into the aims of Luke in his gospel. The thesis then suggests that Luke does not intend his work as a history of Jesus, but, rather, as a handbook for salvation.en_US
