Bachelor thesis “Liability for defamation in the mass media” goal is to cognize, how honor and dignity on the internet should be regulated, and how to solve problems in practice. It is necessary, because nowadays on the internet it is huge exchange of information there, which often leads to defamation. Defamation may be caused with any kind of record on the internet, including blogs, anonymous comments and others. Website maintainer, who has become aware of the possible defamation, has to assess, does he agree with it, and erase the record, or thinks, that there has not been a defamation and therefore becomes liable for it, if the court decides that there has been defamation. It is necessary to modify laws in Latvia to remove terminology problems, which have been risen from inconsistent usage of terms „honor”, „dignity”, „reputation” and „information”.
