Atslēgas vārdi: autiskā spektra traucējumi, mātes, vainas izjūta, vecāku stresa līmenis The purpose of this paper is to analyze level of parental stress and maternal feelings of guilt, as it relates to parents with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The paper will also attempt to answer the following questions: Is there a difference in stress levels between mothers whose children suffer from Autism Spectrum Disorders and those mothers whose children are of typical development? Is there a difference in maternal feelings of guilt between mothers whose children suffer from Autism Spectrum Disorders and those mothers whose children are of typical development? Is there a connection between indicators of stress and feelings of guilt in all mothers? Is there a connection among indicators in stress levels between mothers whose children suffer from Autism Spectrum Disorders and those mothers whose children are of typical development? Is there a common indicator of stress levels between mothers whose children suffer from Autism Spectrum Disorders and those mothers whose children are of typical development?
There were two groups of individuals in this experiment: a control group, which consisted of mothers, whose children are of typical development, and second group, which consisted of mothers, whose children suffer from Autism Spectrum Disorders. The total number of mothers who participated in this experiment was 70, with 35 mothers in each group. There were no significant differences in levels of education in either of the groups. The average age of mothers with children of typical development group was 32 years old. The average age of mothers with children who suffer from Autism Spectrum Disorders group was 33 years old. There were two questionnaires used during this experiment: “Parenting Stress Inventory”, adapted for uses in Latvia by Laura Pirsko; “Maternal Guilt Questionnaire, Kuhn & Carter, 2006. The second questionnaire was translated and adapted to this experiment. When results of this experiment were analyzed, it is clear that mothers whose children suffer from Autism Spectrum Disorders display higher indicators in both levels of stress and feeling of guilt. There were significant statistical correlations found between levels of stress and feelings of guilt among mothers
in both groups. The important contribution of this experiment is that it touches upon
Autism Spectrum Disorders and all problems related with these disorders.
Key words: Autism Spectrum Disorders, mothers, feelings of guilt, parental levels of stress
