This report provides an insight into tricalcium phosphate biomaterials, their properties, methods of synthesis and solubility. The experimental work includes synthesis of tricalcium phosphate with different strontium concentrations using calcium defficient hydroxyapatite and an amorphous calcium phosphate as intermediate phases. Synthesized compounds were characterized by x-ray diffraction, wawelength dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, Fourier-transform infra-red spectroscopy and spectrophotometry. Crystallisation of amorphous tricalcium phosphate were studied at different temperatures. A new route for the production of beta-tricalcium phosphate has been found and the influence of strontium on the synthesis of tricalcium phoshate determined. Thermal stability of calcium deficient hydroxyapatite and amorphous tricalcium phosphates as intermediate products in tricalcium phosphate synthesis were studied.
