The master’s paper „The Monitoring and Assessment of the Implementation of Self-Government Development Strategies in Latvia” describes theoretical issues concerning the elaboration, implementation and assessment of self-government development programmes, as well as the evaluation of the current practice, basing on the experience of Riga which is one the rarest example of assessment of development planning documents in Latvia.
The aim of the paper is to research former planning practice of self-government development in Latvia by evaluating Riga development planning documents. The theoretical part of the research is based on the analysis of literature available in Latvia, but the practical part concerns with detailed research of Riga development planning documents and their monitoring system.
Several conclusions and recommendations were made, of which the main ones are the following: there is not a common policy for the usage of terms development programme and development strategy; there is a lack of interested people involved in the elaboration of development strategies and the society is not fully aware of activities which concern the elaboration, implementation and assessment of development strategies.
