Baccalaureate thesis topic is “Self presentation in photography: example of mobile social network instagram.com”.
The main focus of the presented research is:
1)how do individuals represent themselves in media through photo images?
2)suggested analysis of the popular phenomenon known as a selfie. Do selfies play a large role in an individual’s social media identity?
The research is based on Erving Goffman’s self presentation and visual communication theory. Methodology is composed of both the quantitative and qualitative analyses. Empirical part of the thesis will form a code book, with the help of which the photo images will undergo qualitative analysis.
The results testify that the most common form of self presentation an individual chooses is him/herself, which in turn testifies of elements of narcissism. In addition, it is obvious that the phenomenon known as the selfie has flooded the cellular media application instagram.com and is more popular within the female population.
Key words: instagram.com, photos, selfies, presentation, narcissism.
