The general government debt at moderate level is a very important factor for national economic development, but if it reaches too high level, its positive impact on the economy may change and it can begin to slow down the economic growth.
Bachelor thesis aim is to clarify if the high general government debt level reduces the country’s economic growth in the new European Union member states.
The research results show that it can’t be unequivocally said that the general government debt negatively affects the national growth, because the results depend on the selected countries and time period. High level of debt affects the economic growth through multiple channels, such as raising interest rates, as well as reducing investment and productivity in the country.
