Wordplay is a textual phenomenon, which often occurs in television series, especially situation comedies, and can pose a serious challenge to translators. The goal of this paper was to analyse the translation of wordplay in the television series How I Met Your Mother and Life in Pieces, determine what translation strategies were applied and how effective they are. The descriptive method was applied to research the notion of wordplay, its types and translation strategies, equivalence and features of the audiovisual translation. The analytical method, comparative analysis and statistical method were used to compare the translation with the original, determine the applied strategies and summarize the findings. The conclusions prove that wordplay translation is a difficult task and it often results in a non-humorous, sometimes even clumsy and illogical translation.
