The aim of the master thesis is to examine the relationship between the media text, the spectacle and the media audience in order to understand how social elements, in this case, national identity, are encoded in the media culture. The theoretical part of the master thesis is based on Guy Debord’s “the society of the spectacle” concept, Douglas Kellner’s “media spectacle” concept, mediatization, framing theory, the social construction of reality theory and national identity’s researcher ideas. The quantitative content analysis in the Latvian printed periodicals “Diena”, “Latvijas Avīze” and “Neatkarīgā Rīta Avīze” has been selected for the method of data acquisition of the research. The obtained data processing was used in the focus group discussion, which was formed among representatives of the Latvian printed press audience. The master thesis’ found data suggests that elements of the society of the spectacle are present in Latvian print media as social reality’s representation, society’s seperation and national identity’s representation as positivity.
