The aim of thesis “Emotions and their communication in the “deep story” of young mothers in Latvia” is to explore, how young mothers describe and communicate their everyday life and emotions to others, as well as to identify the “deep story” of young mothers in Latvia. The data has been gathered through ten phenomenological interviews with mothers whose (youngest) child is younger than two years. The interviews have been analysed through the approach of narrative analysis. The theoretical frame of the thesis is based on the emotional work approach of sociologist Arlie Hochschild and available studies on motherhood. Young mothers systematically apply the principles of “emotional work”, communicating their negative experiences only to selected “confidants” due to fear of being misunderstood or even condemned for not complying to the image of the “perfect mother” and dominant narrative in society regarding motherhood.
