Master’s thesis theme:” Writing Skills Development for Form 1 Students with Underdeveloped Phonological Awareness.” Master’s thesis author: Astra Ozoliņa Supervisor: Ph.D. Ilze Šūmane Master’s thesis content: 99 pages, 14 pictures, 4 charts, 34 appendices. Research goal: To explore how to develop writing skills for first grade students with underdeveloped phonological awareness. A case-based study was conducted. In the theoretical part of the master thesis, the author has analysed the theoretical aspects of language and speech, including its role in the development of the youngest school age children. The author also studied and analysed language and speech disorders and described phonological mistakes. Greater value is devoted to underdeveloped phonological awareness. The author describes and analyzes the development opportunities associated with phonological processes and writing skills that are linked to developing phonological awareness. In the empirical part of the study, the author describes her practical research practices in a primary school. This part of research is based on the findings from the theoretical section, and reflects the data collected via questionnaires and interviews with speech therapists and experts who shared details of their work experience and discussed methods and techniques that can help to develop writing skills. In the final part of the study it is proposed that writing is based on spoken language development. In order to develop writing skills it is first necessary to develop phonological awareness. Hence, an important precondition to the development of writing skills is the ability to make phonetic analysis of the spoken word. In order to prevent phonological underdevelopment it is necessary to carry out continuing corrective work in speech therapy. Such corrective work includes the development of phonological awareness and the development of writing skills. The author concludes that in order to develop phonological awareness, different speech therapy exercises, didactic materials and games can be used. The results of the study are summarized in tables and charts and a conclusion is presented. Key words: phonematic underdevelopment, phonemic awareness, development of writing skills, correction developmental activity, didactic materials and games.
