Research in the last twenty years has indicated the importance of emotional intelligence (EI) in the individual’s capability to deal with the demands and the environment in the workplace. This study analyzed EI models and the meaning of EI in the workplace, specifically, the relationship between EI and employee engagement. Participants in this study consisted of 109 respondents, 85% women and 15% men, between the ages 18 to 65 (M=38). To find out the relation between the two variables, two tests were used: Schutte Self-report Emotional Intelligence Test (SCEIT; Schutte, u.c., 1998) which was adapted to Latvian by Viesturs Reņģe and Jeļena Ņižņika in 2012, and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES; Schaufeli, Salanova, Gonzalez-Roma, & Bakker, 2002) which was adapted to Latvian by Sanita Kronberga in 2014. The theoretical analysis in this thesis emphasizes that EI as a concept is an important part in an effective workplace and is an important individual resource when dealing with the demands and the environment of a workplace. Also highlighting the importance of an engaged employee and what it means to an organization. The results gained in this research showed that there is a significant relationship between EI and employee engagement. Exploration of the two variable relation proves that an employee with a higher level of EI will be more engaged in their work. Significant correlation was also gained between the two test subscales. This thesis is backed up by current research in the field and adds an importance point of why EI should be taken more into account in the workplace.
