Most societies bear the scars of their histories, resulting from involvement in war and civil unrest, or adherence to belief systems based on intolerance, racial discrimination or ethnic hostility. Dissonant heritage sites provide important structural evidence of the complexity and sometimes contradictory nature of Europe's historical and cultural heritage. They have a role in commemorative culture as places to experience European history, its different perspectives. Researchers have labeled this legacy with such synonymous terms as uncomfortable, dark, dissonant, complex, negative, etc. Within the framework of this study, the term dissonant heritage is used.
