The goal of this study was to examine whether there are differences in spatial working memory between chess players and non-chess players. Impressed by the findings of the previous studies, author of the paper supposed that chess players would lead in results of spatial working memory test. In addition, it was established whether there is an association between training duration and spatial working memory and achievements in chess and spatial working memory for chess players. Together 62 Latvian and Russian-speaking boys at the age of 10-13, including 32 chess players (mean training duration was M=4,6 years) and 30 non-chess players took part in this study. Participants were examined with Subtest spatial memory from Kaufman Assessment Battery for children (K-ABC, Kaufman & Kaufman, 1983). Results showed differencies in spatial working memory between chess players and non-chess players, thus the hypothesis of the study was approved because, as it was expected, chess players showed better spatial working memory. This suggests that in this age period chess playing gives an advantage because it is conducted in spatial environment, and constantly requires the manipulation of working memory, hence, possibly, contribute to spatial working memory development. There was found no association between the training duration and spatial working memory that partly could be explained by the small amount of sample, but was found weak opposite association between achievements in chess and spatial working memory, which probably indicates that the acquisition of chess achievements are not only high spatial working memory, but also specific knowledge of chess and a deeper understanding of chess internal logic. Key words: chess player, spatial working memoryen_US
