The effect of mechanical defects on the strength distribution of elementary flax fibers. Composites Science and Technology, 2009, Vol. 69, pp. 2152–2157. One of non-traditional applications of flax fibers is as a reinforcment in composite materials. Mechanical properties of flax fibers are affected by the existing mechanical defects in them, occurring not only in growth process but also in the handling process. Therefore statistical threatment of flax characteristics is needed. The standart tensile tests are used to obtain the strength distribution of the fibers and the amount of defects (kink bands) in fibers are observed by microscope. The strength distribution is obtaned, based on the assumption that the defects are limiting fiber strength, and it is found that the obtained theoretical distribution coincides well with the experimental data.
The work has been carried out in the Institute of Polymer Mechanics of the University of Latvia. The results have been published in a paper J. Andersons, E. Poriķe, E. Spārniņš.
