Possibilities to determine skin moisture by using inverse Monte Carlo simulations were studied in this work. Water absorption spectra in the near infrared spectral range of 900 nm to 1700 nm has distinct maximum and minimum intensities, therefore this spectral range could be used to determine skin moisture level by using optical methods. Three different skin models were created and used to do Monte Carlo simulations with the purpose of to see how different input parameters affect the intensity and form of the diffuse reflectance spectrum. The simulated spectra were then compared to the experimentally obtained spectra, and skin moisture level was estimated. This was achieved by the developed inverse Monte Carlo approach.
The results show that by using Monte Carlo simulations it is possible to effectively simulate diffuse reflectance spectra and, by using the inverse approach, determine the moisture level of human skin.
